Black Pearl goesto debut directorThe Australian director Glendyn Ivin has won a Black Pearl Award at the Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi. He was named best new narrative director, a prize worth $54,000, for his debut feature Last Ride. The film stars Hugo Weaving as a desperate father who goes on the run with his 10-year-old son Chook (Tom Russell) after committing a violent crime. It will be released on DVD on November 4.Emerging artistThe Sydney photographer Helen Pynor is the winner of the $15,000 Royal Bank of Scotland emerging artist award. Pynor's three-panel photographic work Milk, chosen from more than 50 finalists, will become part of the bank's corporate collection. As well as the cash Pynor will receive an around-the-world airline ticket to take part in an international development program. All finalists are on show in the RBS Tower foyer, 88 Phillip Street, Sydney, until October 30.
