Airline Ticket Levy To Stay: Howard

Illawarra Mercury

Saturday September 14, 2002

The Federal Government would continue its airline ticket levy to ensure former Ansett workers received their entitlements, Prime Minister John Howard said yesterday.

Mr Howard said the Government had advanced $328 million to the administrator to fund payment of entitlements and redundancies for workers who lost their jobs when the airline collapsed a year ago.

A $10 ticket levy was introduced by the Government to help fund workers' entitlements after Ansett collapsed last year.

Mr Howard said the Government had collected $100 million from the levy so far. He said the Government had not promised to go beyond ``minimum" entitlements plus eight weeks redundancy.

The ACTU said that former Ansett staff had only been paid half their total entitlements, with about $370 million still owing.
